Night of the Proms in 2009

Flash

We leave 2009 with a mixed feeling. A musical very good edition in Charleroi with a quite disappointing number of visitors; this risks the chances to enjoy another Night of the Proms show again in the spring of this year. The spring shows could be made more attractive with more communication about the shows and more visibility in the streets, press, etc … to make them as successful as 2008. We’re waiting for news from the organization.

The silver jubilee in 2009 added a new aspect to NOTP: the party is not only a concert but also a real show; the editions in Antwerp, Arnhem and Rotterdam surprised by the choreography of the extra’s, the performance of Fine Fleur and the remarkable lightshow. This renewed concept should be kept as guidance for next editions. On top of that NOTP taught us to keep delivering good quality for a reasonable price. End conclusion: a very grateful feeling for NOTP in 2009 and we really hopeful for the fall editions of 2010.

We learned a lot during the first five months of our website; we thanks Christophe, Laurent, Kris and Wim a lot for their cooperation, the organization, all visitors, friends on our forum and all those who have send us their feedback of material. 2010 will be an investment in the archives of NOTP and let our website evolve more than before.

Charleroi 2009
On the 20th of February 2009 the program was announces during a press conference: read our review here.
The headlines were: Chic, Alison Moyet, Gerard Lenorman, Igudesman & Joo and Midge Ure who lead the Electric Band. A review of those show can be read here.

Fall editions
At the fall editions in Antwerp and The Netherlands a world exclusive was announced on the 5th of May 2009, the performance of Roxette. Our review of that press conference is available here. A lot more details about the shows were provided during the press conference of the 10th of September 2009: see our review of that conference.

Besides Roxette are Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation, OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark), Toots Thielemans, the Katona twin guitarist, John Miles and Fine Fleur. Click here for our preview at that time of the artists and a probable set list.
In Germany the line-up is partially different. There we find Fine Fleur in a limited version, Roxette, the Katona twin guitarist, John Miles, Alan Parsons, Christina Stürmer and the band Heaven 17. You can find the lineup for Germany here.

OUR REVIEW FOR THE FALL OF 2009: IT’S GOING TO BE A BIG PARTY

20090910_11-50-27_mg_89421 For the 25th anniversary of the shows in Antwerp you will be welcomed in the arena by living music instruments, and the choir will be dressed up festivity by Erna Siebens. Also the orchestra will be dressed up in the 2nd part of the show. The website of Erna Siebens ernasiebens.be

The choir Fine Fleur will be back on stage this year and will be divided in a 24-headed choir of supernumeraries who will bring the atmosphere in the arena and on stage, the other part (about 16 people) will be standing on stage and will sing with the orchestra and guide the artists.

For the first time, they will work with sets that change during the show; at the lightshow they will not only use invisible UV paint with black lights, but also with LED lights with low resolution. This concept is unique throughout the world. With some songs, some fireworks will be used.

Toots Thielemans, who was there 25 years age, will definitely bring Bluesette and a beautiful version of What a Wonderful World that you know without a doubt of Louis Armstrong. If Toots is playing with another artists, we could not figure out. 20090910_13-14-59_mg_91921

Some music pieces that will be brought and that are worth explaining in detail, are:
* A special edition of the Bolero by Ravel
* Stairway to heaven, a rock classic
* Suite to dance, urban music
* The Overture from Poet and Peasant

The organization expects a lot of the music of a surprising corner. Tommy Tallarico (his website tallarico.com writes music for video games. In the US this music was brought by a symphonic orchestra during the Video Games Live shows (watch and here the trailer through videogameslive.com). They especially had Advent Rising Suite in mind to perform.

20090910_13-05-45_mg_9108 The classical pieces will pleasantly surprise everyone again. The brothers Katona are special guitar player with an open mind which enables them to play also Michael Jackson besides the classical pieces. We expect a big ovation by the audience.

The first arrangement and orchestrations of the songs of Roxette sound promising. Also Per
Gessle sounds enthusiastic (see his announcement on YouTube).

OMD will play the same set as in Charleroi 2008 and that promises a lot of fun (Maid of Orleans, Souvenir, Locomotion, Enola Gay). notp-charleroi-19-04-08-041

Sharon den Adel and Within Temptation performed in the past with the Metropolitan Orchestra, mainly with arrangements written by Frank van der Heijden; while the band is recording a new CD, Sharon in performing alone. The music of Black Symphonic sounds promising; sometimes it looks like pure Haydn.

cd-john-miles Finally, different CD’s are announced. The track list of the Best of John Miles at Night of the Proms was made public on the 9th of September 2009: our first comments.
Also the new Best Of double CD is made public: our first review here.
It’s still unclear if there will be a CD of the Belgian and Dutch shows.
